In Praise. Of David. Caruso.

By Rob A. McKenzie

Don’t think of it as overacting. Think of it as magical realism.

David Caruso is regularly lampooned for his mannered performance as Lieut. Horatio Caine on CSI: Miami, but I’m addicted to the series and wish to praise the man and his work.

Those who mock Caruso are missing the point that Horatio is not entirely human – he has a dash of the supernatural. He appears out of nowhere and vanishes as suddenly. He knows all and sees all. He is perfectly groomed and never flustered, not even in a rooftop knife fight with the boss of the Rio mob, during which he banters most cleverly. He is a father figure who calls grown men “son.” He always gets the last word. He watches over all, yet needs none.

Consider him not as a dandified cop but as a laconic guardian angel (Anthony Zuiker, who created the CSI shows, describes Horatio as “the great protector”).

The CSI: Miami ad here (which was produced in-house by the people at Showcase, thereby demonstrating that a good idea is worth more than a big budget) captures Caruso’s appeal to a tee.

I’ve watched that thing 15 times and it’s still funny.

Caruso was last nominated for an Emmy in 1994, back in his days on NYPD Blue. He lost to the seething ball of hate played by Dennis Franz on the same series. Caruso will never be nominated for his rendition of Horatio. The performance is neither broad nor subtle enough; it’s quixotic.

I love this guy. May he endure through a hundred seasons of solitude. Right, Raphael?
